Voxelgeddon Voxel Competition 2013

Good afternoon, PPM. We are over two weeks into VOXELGEDDON 2013, the free reign voxel competition. There are 13 DAYS remaining to submit your entries for your chance to win. Sadly there are no prizes available this time, but hey, voxel competions are fun, right? The rules for the competition are as follows:

  • 1) Only one submission per entrant
  • 2) The entry is to include the Voxel and HVA. If applicable, turret and barrel voxels and HVA's, offset values must also be provided.
  • 3) Voxels must be new and exclusive to the competition, previously released voxels or Westwood edits will not be accepted.
  • 4) Once submitted, your entries can not be changed. Make sure you're happy with your voxel before submitting it.
  • 5) Your voxel can be made for any game you chose. Please state when submitting your voxel what game the voxel is for (TS, RA2).
  • 6) Entries must be submitted to Aro (Me) by the 30th of June 2013 (00:00GMT)
  • 7) I will only be accepting submissions via PRIVATE MESSAGE! No emails! No IM Client!


So what are you waiting for? Head to the official competition thread for all the necessary information on Rules and how your submissions will be judged and get voxeling! You can make any voxel of any theme you desire, the voxel can be made for either TS or RA2, but make sure you specify when you submit your voxel!

YR Argentina is back online.

After a week of downtime due to a hacker invasion (that has affected many other sites in this server, including PPM), YR Argentina is back online. Due to a software upgrade, the old layout has been lost, being temporarily replaced with a standard one, but that will change in due time.

YR Argentina is one of the most traditional resource site for those who modify Command & Conquer games created before Generals. It has a vast collection of voxel models, sprites, maps and much more. Pay it a visit.

Voxelgeddon 2013: Deadline Extension

Good afternoon, PPM. Due-to the large number of people whom claim to have only just missed the deadline for VOXELGEDDON 2013, I have extended the deadline to the 8th of July 2013. So get your voxel on the go, you have a week to finalize and make any last minute entries to your voxels. The rules for the competition are as follows, and remain the same despite the deadline extension:

  • 1) Only one submission per entrant

Hey everyone! I have posted all of the voxels that were submitted to Voxelgeddon 2013. There were 8 voxels submitted altogether!

I, Morpher and OmegaBolt have tested and reviewed every voxel and I have posted them up for download at our Voxel's Section. Here's the ranking. Click at the name of the voxel for detailed review and map download:

Mental Omega 3.0 - Beta testers needed!

With 9 sub-factions, 36 completely new singleplayer missions, 15 cooperative missions and a bunch of other nice things, the closed beta is now feature-complete, at least as far as the first release is concerned. We're now looking for bugs & balance issues so before Mental Omega 3.0 goes into the public beta status, I'd like to invite more people to the closed beta, especially for multiplayer balance tests.

If you're interested in beta testing the upcoming 3.0 version of Mental Omega, both singleplayer and multiplayer, hop on Mental Omega IRC channel (#menthosogma@irc.rizon.net if you use a client or just go to http://mo.cncguild.net/chat) and talk to me when I'm around. I can already say that you'll require an account on http://forums.revora.net to get the beta. The amount of people we'll let in is limited.

Voxel Section Editor III and SIBGRAPI: The story continues.

Hello ladies and gentlemen. Sorry for the silent days in the news. I've been busy with a lot of things related to my real life. One of the things is also related to Voxel Section Editor III. For a couple of years, we've been researching means to convert voxel models from VXLSE III and place them into new games as 3D polygonal models, with textures, etc. Of course, we still have a long way ahead to acheive this goal. However, I'm proud to announce that our method to obtain triangle meshes (with colored vertices and normals per face) has been recognized by the computer graphics scientific community in South America as one of the full papers published at SIBGRAPI 2013. This is one of the strongest international conferences in computer graphics at South America. In this year, it should happen at the city of Arequipa, in Peru. And it starts on monday.

The name of the paper that I'll present there is Polygonal Mesh Extraction From Digital Voxel Art. And here's the abstract:

This work presents a method to extract polygonal surfaces from volumetric models created by artists, proposing a way of using voxel modeling tools to build B-Rep models.

The volumetric data created by voxel editors usually contain topological features that do not describe solid structures. Hence, the main objective of this work is to solve the problem of extracting triangle meshes from volumes that contain these topological features.

In order to extract surfaces successfully, a methodology was conceived to resample any volumetric model, in a way that it is possible to reconstruct a tridimensional manifold that can be polygonized without generating a surface with gaps or topological problems.

The meshes generated by this technique have good properties, satisfying some of the main criteria used to measure the quality of meshes, such as aspect ratio, smoothness and skewness.



And this is just the first step, of course. Right now, I've just packed my stuff and I'm going to the airport. This month will be insane for me and Arequipa is just the start of it.

The paper should be available for the public by the end of the event.

In a short note, this is not the first time I managed to publish something on SIBGRAPI, for those who remember this.

Hello everyone! I've returned from Arequipa last saturday morning and I've been a bit quiet in the news, since this month is a bit hectic. I've presented a technical paper called 'Polygonal Mesh Extraction From Digital Voxel Art', last wednesday atn the conference SIBGRAPI 2013. Unfortunately, I couldn't get good pictures from that, so here's the best I could get, moments before the presentation starts:





And the city of Arequipa is a very beautiful place. As a citizen of Rio de Janeiro, things such as the height (2350 metters above sea level), proximity to active volcanos such as El Misti, possibility of earth quakes and the very dry climate were new things for me. Also, it was the first time I've seen snow in real life, since such things does not exist in Rio, but the top of the mountains of Arequipa were full of them. My lips and nose are still devastated by the mix of dry climate and height, but fortunately Misti and the earth itself were quiet during my stay. Here's some pictures for those curious ones:

Also, the food there is awesome, since I love very condimented food and it was a nice opportunity to practice english, since my spanish was terrible and they doesn't seem to be able to understand portuguese properly, unlike other spanish speaking people.

Anyway, this technical paper has been added at our Scientific Articles section and it explains how to obtain models from binary density voxel grids that you can manipulate with most mesh processing methods available in the literature.



Finally, I must admit that my month is not over in terms of crazy things to do and the next step is fully related to PPM. As you may have heard in some other sites, Electronic Arts will take part of Gamescom 2013, displaying many of their upcoming games, including Command & Conquer, which will have an event called CommandCOM. PPM will send one person there to do all the coverage. I know some of you may find it strange, as the game won't be moddable (at least in a lower term), but new C&C games always inpires our modders and I'm pretty sure many people here would like to play it when it is released.

Time for some updates... since I probably won't finish any new stuff I'm doing currently until September comes by.

Didn't bother to post but last June there have also been new units as well namely...
Giant Squid - Smaller Squids with no Tentacle Love
Colossal Squid - Good Old Tentacle Lover
Avenger - Anti-Air/Anti-Infantry Vehicle for the Eagle Command
Yuri Naval Yard Graphical Fixes
Yuri-Soviet Stolen Unit - Golem
Soviet-Soviet Stolen Unit - Tarantula Walker
Allied-Allied Stolen Unit - Pulse Tank

First up are some minor graphical tweaks/enhancements.


Guardian GI's now have a small laser sight visible when deployed. Just another tweak to make their ability of adding laser sights when deployed more prominent.


The Original Initiate Graphics had an unfinished and incomplete Firing Frames. I've fixed this so that they are unlit as with the Conscripts & GI's.


A New Death Animation used for infantry killed by Yuri's Death Ray Technology (Floating Disk,Mothership,Star Gazer,Obelisk)


Crazy Ivans get their own Veterancy Pips.


The Zealot no longer wears heavy armor but instead like the Initiate only dons jumpsuits. However they like the initiates now have the most powerful weapons for the basic infantry.

New Equipment for some of the Factions...


The Secret Police get the Assault Bunker, This Building replaces the Battle Bunker and has much more strength to boot. It's biggest gimmick is that it can allow almost any infantry to garrison inside. Tesla Trooper,Navy SEAL & Acolyte to name a few.


The Chaos Cell now has their own unique Main Battle Tank. These Drugged up Tanks have the uncanny ability to increase their rate of fire the longer they attack. After some more time they start to disregard their own defense and prioritize attack. (-25% Armor, +50% Firepower)

-They take up the gimmick of the Allied Jaguar Tank as well now gain a nifty double-edged buff from Attach Effect.


The Soviet War Miner finally has their own unique graphics.


Also introducing is the new Yuri Hover Miner. The Hover Miner is armed with a Self-Generating Force field which increases its Armor but slows it down.


The Hydra Transport is a unique Gunship/Transport Helicopter for the Soviet Army. Replacing the Mobile Weapons Factory. The Hydra is armed to the teeth with 2x 105mm Cannons and 2 4-burst HE Rocket Pods. Their transporting ability comes in useful as they can carry up to Size 6 Units. (Battle Fortress,Apocalypse Tank & Mastermind for some examples)


A New Defense Building for Yuri. The Obelisk (of Enlightenment) fires a powerful death ray that is more powerful than the feared Tesla Coil but at a cost has a much longer cooldown before it can fire again.



Visceroids are horribly mutated humans whose own body has devolved into a blob of flesh and musculature. They can be easily killed though but...



Yuri also gets a new Support Power called Tib-X Missile which sends out a Star Flare Jet to drop the missile. The Missile releases toxic clouds and mutates any human infantry in the blast zone into visceroids.

Alternate Warfare is a Total Conversion on C&C3 engine, the background story is set in the Cold War era in a different timeline, in which the experimental weapons that never practically saw service are granted a chance to prove themselves in the battlefield. As the Commander, you will have to battle through a series of campaigns dating from regional conflict in the 70s to a full-scale nuclear war in the mid-90s, make use of these new weapons wisely in order to emerge victorious in this Alternate Warfare.

The ECM vehicle, despite lacking the heavy armor and cannon fitted to a battle tank and the mobility of aircraft, can pose an even greater threat than either to the enemy.

When in Passive Mode: Detects enemy radars, units and structures using active abilities.

When in Active Mode: Prevents enemy units and structures from using active abilities, removing Bonus granted by enemy Commanding Units.

Nodsoldiergirl, Sybert and Doom Tanker released the 22nd episode of Community Battlecast Primetime, which interviews the Rise of the Red team, covers news about the closure of EA Phenomic, upcoming Gamescom news, mods, community arts and the Battlecast 5. They've also started to redesign CBPT. It looks better now, although it may receive additional improvements in the upcoming episodes.

Hello everyone! Our coverage on our own hosted mods in this month was somewhat shameful, but the reason is that I'm doing two trips this month. One to Arequipa in Peru, which happened earlier in this month and, the next one, I think I can reveal now: I'm going to Cologne, in Germany. But, before talking about Cologne, I'm going to talk about the news about the mods here. We had one mod being released (Crossfire), which will receive its own news post later. For this news post, I'll focus on the mods that did not had releases in this month:


-> Eternal Armaggedon: The Devastation, a total conversion for Yuri's Revenge that should bring 7 factions to anihilate each other at the battlefield, has several screenshots of Allied units such as Mobile Gap Generator, Mirage Tank and Guardian Battle Tank. The picture below shows the Guardian Battle Tank:





-> Tiberian Sun: Rewire, a total conversion that brings Tiberian Sun with much cooler graphics at Yuri's Revenge, has received from Gangster a new pack of graphic updates. Do you recognize these GDI buildings? They are still work in progress:




-> Twisted Insurrection has a new GDI Orca Dropship at their disposal:
